Semakin Panasss: Ahli Parlimen BN Tarik Diri!

20 Julai 2011, Rabu

JERANTUT: Three-term Jerantut member of parliament Tan Sri Tengku Azlan Sultan Abu Bakar yesterday announced that he will not be seeking reelection in the next general election.
The former deputy transport minister who has been an MP since 1999, said he had decided to call it quits to make way for other young and capable leaders.

"It is my personal decision... I want to call it a day and have no plans to contest the next general election.

"I am already in my 60s and age is catching up. After serving three terms as Jerantut MP, I believe that the time has come for me to call it quits," said Tengku Azlan.
He said this after presenting prizes to winners of the Pulau Tawar football and netball league at Tekam Plantation, here, yesterday.

Tengku Azlan said he had informed Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak of his decision not to contest in the next general election.

Tengku Azlan, who is Jerantut Umno division chief, said in his three terms he had strived to carry out various development projects for the people in his constituency.

"I managed to bring unity among the Barisan Nasional component parties and also build trust among the younger generation in the government," he said.

In the 2008 general election, Tengku Azlan beat Hamzah Jaaffar from Pas by a majority of 1,946 votes. He was then offered the deputy foreign affairs minister's post.

However, after having previously served as the deputy transport minister, Tengku Azlan, who is the sultan of Pahang's brother, declined the post.

Meanwhile, in Kuala Kangsar, Bernama reports that the Perak Barisan Nasional is identifying potential candidates for the next general election.

Its chairman, Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir, said a list of potential candidates who met the criteria set by Najib -- that they can win elections and are liked by the people -- was being prepared.

Zambry, who is Perak menteri besar, said the list would consist of a mix of old and new faces.

"The identifying of candidates has to be done from now to avoid a last-minute selection," he said after launching the Perak Puteri Umno general election machinery at Sekolah Kebangsaan Kota Lama Kanan near Kuala Kangsar.

Zambry said that a candidate chosen in a hurry could sometimes turn out to be someone disliked by the voters. He said this was to be avoided by Perak Barisan Nasional.
